Standing for Quest Motoring Xperience, it's a revised version of the maker's SUV Koleos concept car, which debuted in Paris last year.
This new model features a fresh grille and was unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show to honour Samsung - a car manufacturer in its own right in South Korea - which is Renault's production partner in the Koleos project.
The QMX has a 177bhp 2.0-litre dCi turbodiesel engine and Hill Start Assist, plus Hill Descent Control. These features will appear on the production version of the compact SUV to provide it with genuine off-roading capability. They have been developed using 4x4 know-how from Renault's partner Nissan.
Going up against Ford's planned Focus SUV, the Honda CR-V and VW's forthcoming Tiguan, the roadgoing version of the QMX will arrive in dealers here early next year, priced from around £16,000.
It is expected to look virtually identical to the concept, with only the lights and wheels being toned down for the showroom. The production model will be built at Samsung's factory in South Korea and shipped to Europe. Renault will most likely take the wraps off the car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
It will be joined by an even larger 4x4 model in 2009 which will compete with Peugeot's 4007 and the Citroen C-Crosser. That car is expected to offer a seven-seat layout, while the production version of the Koleos will have space for five.
