The Isuzu VehiCROSS was a limited production SUV adapted from a concept originally revealed at the 1993 Tokyo Auto Show. Wanting to prove they were more than a simple truck manufacturer, Isuzu was able to bring the VX into production for the JDM market in 1997, with a release in the US in 1999. The VX was always intended for limited production (an example of a "Halo car" which was supposed to draw in new customers to view the showroom model) with intended production numbering less than 10,000 - actual production was slightly over 4000 with the bulk sold in the US. Using the last few digits of the VIN, my VehiCROSS is number 0580 produced in 2001. I had decided on yellow before ever seeing one in this color and basically searched/waited for almost 2 years before finding one (I almost settled on the Foxfire Red Mica or Ebony Black - I'm glad I held out). I bought my VX on 5/26/01 and have not regretted buying it for a minute. It is hands down my favorite vehicle of all I have owned (quite a statement conisidering the number of vehicles I have owned title to). My VX has a really remarkable balance of characteristics, spanning both the desirable from a sports car perspective, and the necessary from a SUV/Off-road vehicle view-point. I think this could only have been achieved through a company like Isuzu, who produced such wonderful real SUVs and sports cars such as the Impulse.
I've had various people ask me "Why modify the VehiCROSS, especially if it's so great? Doesn't it come with everything?" I guess for many who purchase a car or truck, it's simple to go down a list and pick accessories that you may want to finance through the initial purchase. Sometimes you don't realize you want something until you see it on someone else's truck. In my case, there were a few nagging omissions to the Isuzu Accessory offering for the VehiCROSS (specifically I was searching for Mud/Splash Guards and Window Air Deflectors). Sure the VX already has a ton of great features (the standard Recaro seats come to mind) so my guess is that Isuzu reasoned the demand for dealer accessories to be small. The VX comes stock with: 3.4L DOHC 24-valve V6 employs variable induction, direct-attack valvetrain and coil-over-plug ignition, Torque-on-Demand Full-Time 4WD System, Monotube shocks with external heat-expansion chambers, 6.5 inches of ground clearance, 18" Aluminum Alloy Wheels, Aircraft-type fuel filler, Aircraft-type fuel filler, Leather Recarro Seats, Carbon Fiber weave gauges and Carbon Fiber look door inserts.
