Your next-door neighbour, Fred, knows that you are studying at TAFE and are taking classes in computer systems maintenance. He has a computer in his study that he has been using for invoicing for his plumbing business. He uses a simple account-keeping package that prints out invoices on 2 part carbonless paper on an Epson LQ 500 dot matrix printer. Whilst having a quiet drink with Fred he has asked for your advice about improving the performance of his computer and fixing some problems he is experiencing. He feels he may need to upgrade so that he can run some of the new software that he hears people talking about. Fred wants to keep his existing system intact and improve it by the addition of parts only, thereby reducing the financial outlay.
You agreed to take a look at the system as it currently stands and identify the following components and specifications.
Externally it is a mini-tower case with a 14” SVGA monitor, standard 5 pin 104 key keyboard, 2 button serial mouse and amplified speakers. There is a single 3.5” floppy disk and an 8X CD ROM.
Upon opening the case you identify the components as:
Computer case.
The case is a standard mini-tower. Once inside you find that there are 3 * 3.5” bays, one is free and the others occupied by the hard drive and floppy. There are 2 * 5.25” bays one of which is taken by the CD ROM. The AT power supply has 2 spare power connectors and is a 250watt supply.
Main board
The motherboard is quite old (7+ years) and is somewhat unique in that it has dual spots for CPUs. The socket 370 is empty and the slot 1 contains what ultimately proves to be an Intel Slot 1 Celeron 333 Mhtz CPU. There are 3 SDRAM slots, one of which contains a 32 Megabyte PC66 memory module. The motherboard has on-board video, modem, sound and networking as well as pin sets for adding a PS2 connector and an USB connector.
Hard drive & floppy drive
Whilst investigating the system from the CMOS you find that the hard disk is a Western Digital 2Gb hard disk installed using LBA mode and the floppy drive is a 1.44.
CMOS settings
Further investigation reveals that motherboard speed and clock ratio settings are kept in the CMOS. It has settings for 66Mhtz and 100Mhtz for motherboard speed and clock ratios from 3.5 to 8 in .5 increments. The main board has video memory settings for using 2, 4, or 8 megabytes of the system’s RAM.
Other Hardware
You also notice a box containing a Zip drive sitting on the shelf but not connected to the system. When questioned, Fred said he purchased it twelve months ago to keep backups of his accounting files, but has not been able to get it to work. He really would like it operational as he is finding it both annoying and time-consuming backing up his files to floppies.
Fred also mentions that he has purchased a new USB 2 scanner, but has not yet hooked it up. You investigate and find the scanner has no power adaptor and expects to get power from the USB port.
When the system starts there are many error messages. Either they generally refer to files referenced in the Windows registry, or system.ini but which are missing on the hard drive. Eventually the system gives the traditional Windows 95 desktop, which is cluttered with icons. On checking, you find that it is version B of Windows 95.
Fred admits that his knowledge of computers is rudimentary and he relies heavily on his children (both at secondary school) to help him out when the system fails. Whilst looking over the contents of the hard drive (which is 85% filled) you find that there are many games that have been installed and partially uninstalled. You suspect that the system software has undergone many upgrades and changes.
Software applications you find on the computer include:
• The accounting software (which is DOS based)
• Lotus SmartSuite97 (bundled with the machine)
• A copy of MS Office 97 (Added by Fred’s children for their school work)
• Various games, some working and some not
Fred says that he can only afford to spend a maximum of $550 ( $ Úc) to improve the present system.
