As it has been widely rumored in the auto industry for two years, Daimler has finally confirmed the existence of its new nine-speed planetary automatic for rear-drive cars, expected to be designated 9G-Tronic.
Most commentators had expected the new transmission to make its official debut in the 2014 S-Class luxury sedan, revealed to the press in May of this year. Observers were surprised that the S-Class models presented were exclusively fitted with the current 7G-Tronic automatic, which dates back almost a decade. In June, however, a Mercedes-Benz engineer gave details of the new transmission at an industry conference in Germany.
Speaking at the VDI Gearbox Congress in Friedrichshafen, Dr. Christoph Dörr outlined the key features of the 9G-Tronic, claimed to be the world’s first nine-speed unit for longitudinal vehicle architectures. Reporting from the conference, the engineering journal ATZ/MTZ stated that the 9G-Tronic will be suitable for all Mercedes rear- and all-wheel drive model lines from the C-Class to the S-Class. It will gradually replace the current 7G-Tronic across all of these lines, appearing as a running change in some already-launched model series.
Dr. Dörr said that the new transmission would offer “harmonic” intervals between its nine gears, and that it would have a ratio spread of 9:15. While significantly broader than current planetary automatics, this is still more restricted than the seven-speed DCT fitted to the Porsche Panamera luxury sports sedan. Compared to the 7G-Tronic seven-speed, Dörr is reported as saying, the new transmission will provide a fuel saving of 6.5 percent, and a range of versions will accept throughput torques of up to 1000 Nm.
The gearbox’s internal architecture comprising four planetary gear sets and six shift elements has been patented, and Daimler claims its fully integrated direct electronic control is the first of its type.
Much of the transmission’s claimed fuel saving is likely to be derived from its ability to run at consistently low engine rpm. The wide spread of the nine ratios gives very tall overall gearing – barely 1,000 rpm at 100 km/h, according to reports from the conference. The extension of the operating range to these low engine speeds is enabled by a centrifugal torsional damper, and stop-start is standard on the transmission. The 9G-Tronic will be offered in rear- or all-wheel drive, in hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms, and also as a sports transmission with the torque converter replaced by a launch clutch.
No launch timetable has yet been made public, though ATZ speculates that the official presentation could be made at the IAA Frankfurt show in September.
Shortly after Daimler’s confirmation of the 9G-Tronic program came the announcement of upgraded versions of competitor ZF’s highly successful eight-speed 8HP. The second-generation model is claimed to provide additional fuel savings of up to 3 percent, achieved by reducing internal drag torque, lowering engine speed, broadening the ratio spread and cutting its operating system pressure from 5 to 3.5 bars. The second-generation 8HP will be offered for torques between 220 and 750 Nm, as well as in a hybrid version, and will appear in production cars in the summer of 2014.
