The 4B11T/Theta II
The ‘Theta II’ as named by Hyundai, is just one branch of the ‘World Motor’ tree. The ‘Theta II’ shares is basic design with the 4B11T found in Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution and Lancer Ralliart platforms. It’s also is built on the same ‘World Engine’ platform as the 2006+ Hyundai Sonata and newer Dodge/Chrysler products, like the Caliber, that use the GEMA World Engine 2.4. The World engine design was a joint Venture, so to speak, between Mitsubishi and Hyundai. Flavors include a 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.4L.
The Theta II found in the Genesis Coupe, while sharing the same outward structure with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Ralliart versions, is quite a bit different. They both share the same basic block castings, and overall designs, but the difference is in the details.
Focusing on the Theta II, we find that the engine designed for the Genesis Coupe has some rather nice features. Basic figures are as follows: Horsepower: (est.) 210hp @ 6,000 rpm, Torque: (est) 223lb/ft @ 2500 rpm. While this does not strike me as a huge number, there are a few things to note: 9.3:1 compression ration lends itself to good off throttle response, and making torque down is ALWAYS a good thing. Variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams is also present.
From a tuning standpoint, it seems the Theta II should be able to cope with up to about 29 PSI. This opens up a very wide range of tuning options, and indicates that 300-350 hp is well within reason. Factor in a turbo swap and some supporting mods, and you have yourself a very competent motor. It appears that a good number of 4B11T (Mistu.) parts should swap over, and the doors to tuning beyond 350 hp have been opened. It appears that the limiting factors are the powder sintered rod, cast pistons, and two bolt mains, versus the forged rods, Mahle pistons and 4 bolt mains of the World Motor version found in the Lancer Evolution/Ralliart line......
