The best-selling motorised two-wheeler in Europe, the Honda SH 125/150 is now being joined by a 300cc model. The technology of this new maxi-scooter is sure to appeal to the many people who travel beyond the city centre.

Repeating the success of the SH 125 in a 300 cc version

Since 1984, the SH has embodied Honda's vision of the urban scooter with big 16-inch diameter wheels. This segment has met with huge success in Italy, to such an extent that the SH 125 and 150 have been bestsellers there for years.
However, although the 125 displacement class constitutes the core target of the European market, an increasing number of scooter users who hold motorcycle licences are opting for a mid-displacement machine (250-400 cc), in order to criss-cross the great urban centres of Europe - Rome, Milan, Barcelona or Paris.
Living in the suburbs, working in the city centre: whether by choice or obligation, this trend has led Honda to offer a 300 cc version of the SH, the idea being, of course, to reuse the recipes of the 125 to reproduce its success, whilst adding a touch of new technology to finally convince bikers who are still hesitant about the idea of converting to a scooter. In short, "the goal of creating Europe's 'Best Commuting Partner'", according to the press kit!

The frame of the 300 is much sturdier than that of the SH 125, although their dimensions are similar. The main innovation involves the engine being linked to the frame by a three-piece articulating system, which improves comfort while maintaining road holding.

© HondaMotocross-derived engine!
The engine of the SH 300 has nothing in common with that of the SH 125. Honda started out almost from scratch, taking as its model a motocross bike, the CRF 250! Of course, the shortened version in the press kit is a little facile, but one has to admit that the idea is appealing, because motocross single-cylinders are unbeatable in terms of the compactness/performance ratio.

Indeed, the engine of the SH 300 boasts, among other things, the distinctive feature of having a sealed crankcase, thereby eliminating the occurrence of power-robbing oil windage (the crankshaft is no longer awash in oil). All in all, these technical solutions have made it possible to obtain a particularly high maximum power output of 27 hp, close to that delivered by 400 cc models, whilst preserving the reliability and smooth operation that are typical of Honda scooters.
The combination of this performance and a limited weight (172 kg with a full tank) enables the rider to enjoy a particularly marked agility not only in town, but also on expressways or motorways. With a top speed timed at around 150 kph (93 mph), overtaking poses not the slightest problem. The SH 300, with its superb engine, is nonetheless very low on fuel consumption (around 3.5 l/100 km in standard use) and clean (Euro 3).
Innovative swingarm
The SH 300 remains true to the "typical scooter" technology of the engine being an integral part of the rear swingarm. However, the engineers have adapted it to go beyond the structural limits that make it necessary to sacrifice comfort for rigidity, which is essential for road holding.

On the SH 300, the engine is linked to the frame by a complex three-piece articulating floating link system, which maintains rigidity and filters out engine vibration.

Guaranteeing the rigidity of the frame while retaining the distinctive feature of the flat floorboard that can be used as a load platform for bulky objects; this was another constraint of the SH 300 project. The engineers' response was simply to take the overall geometry of the SH 125 and modify it for increased sturdiness (larger tubing and three big reinforcements at the level of the steering column, floorboard and rear curve).

Compact and therefore very well suited to the city, the SH 300 also gives exceptional pleasure once you are out of the traffic jams. This achievement justifies a price above that of the competition.
© HondaVery consistent handling
The benefit of the innovations on the SH 300's chassis is perfectly perceptible in terms of comfort. What little engine vibration that exists is very well filtered, and bumps are handled better by the two rear shock absorbers than on scooters using the standard solution with one single pivot. At the front, the classic telescopic fork works well enough, but on livelier riding its limits will be the first to take into account.

With the 16-inch wheels, the handling of the SH 300 puts great emphasis on stability, whether at high speed or in fast bends. In the city, the very short wheelbase (1,420 mm), limited weight and sleekness of the machine make it as easy to handle as a 125 GT scooter.

The rider benefits from a slightly raised riding position which provides a good view of the traffic, while leaving the option of withstanding bumps with the thighs to protect the small of the back. The pillion passenger enjoys a very pleasant seat with wide retractable footrests.

© HondaA high cost?
At first sight, the price of the SH 300i (£3,599) might seem excessive if one considers that most sales of 250cc scooters in the UK involve products at prices around the £3,000 mark.

On the other hand, demand in this segment is perhaps moving towards more sophisticated machines which, in addition to practicality, are capable of giving real riding pleasure. This is Honda's gamble in launching the new SH 300.

Lastly, Peugeot is selling its Geopolis 250 ABS - direct competitor of the SH - at €4,749 (approximately £3,200, UK prices to be announced)... In these circumstances, the price of the SH seems less overvalued and justified by the more sophisticated engine and an original frame which makes for more comfort.
