<h1>Chevrolet Cruze: chevrolet cruze engine code 84</h1>
Resolved Question:
chevrolet cruze engine code 84 I cleaned the air filter and put it back in, and when I started the car I got this code. The car had driven fine this morning the 80 miles I drove to work. I wanted to clean the air filter cause i drove in a sandstorm yesterday. The engine has less than 40000 miles on it, and has always been serviced. I did not disconnect the sensor from the air cleaner housing. How can I reset this code as I am 80 miles from the nearest chevy dealer. With this code in place the engine will not rev over 1800 rpm so it would be impossible to drive to the dealer.

BOBBYSS :
Hello, and thank you for letting us help you with your automotive question. Is the code P084 or just 84?
Customer:
The only code that shows up on the Dash Panel is 84, I dont have a computer to download the entire computer history
Customer:
Also the service engine soon light is on and the check engine light is on. Can I just disconnect the battery cable for 15 minutes to reset the computer? or is there a fuze I can pull to reset it?
Customer:
hi My name is XXXXX XXXXX X work in Kuwait, I have a 2010 Chevy Cruze, I work with the US Army near the Iraq border, this morning is when the car screwed up so its imperative that I at least can get the codes reset and the car running so I can take it to the dealer which is 80 miles from here. There is nothing out here but desert. I forgot to mention that I started the car with the air filter out for about 2 minutes, I think that must be what set off the codes.
BOBBYSS :
Thank you. This code 84 is not a valid powertrain code for this vehicle. If the vehicle is running fine then I would drive it to the nearest auto parts store to have the computer scanned for codes. Most of them will do this for free. Bring me the codes and I will let you know what is going on. Make sure that none of the electrical connections on the air filter housing are loose as this will cause this problem. I would also check to make sure that the gas cap is tight.
Customer:
Well I cant drive the vehicle because the engine power is reduced so that it will not go more than 1500 rpms. Code 84 is what shows up on the dah panel where the odometer is. So it could very well be P084. Will disconnecting the battery cable reset the computer?
Customer:
There are no auto parts stores here in the desert
BOBBYSS :
It will reset the computer if it is not a serious code. If it is then the code will be recorded and may reappear immediately. Did this come up right after you cleaned the air filter?
Customer:
Yes it was working fine until i Cleaned the air filter that is all i did
BOBBYSS :
If all of the electrical connections are fine and if you did not take off the air flow sensor from the air filter housing and then put it back in backwards then you should just remove the negative battery cable to see if it will reset. Then as soon as you can you will need to have the computer scanned.
Customer:
Ok, I did not remove the air flow sensor, I will take off the negative cable, How long do I need to leave the negative cable off? I read in some forums on the internet to wait 20 minutes.
BOBBYSS :
If you take off both cables and touch them together this will clear it out in about 30 seconds.
Customer:
OK Thank You I will go do this and then let you know if it cleared.
BOBBYSS :
Okay. Let me know and we can continue from there is necessary.

I went out to the car. I decided to start it to see if the code 84 was still on the instrument panel. After the starting the car there was no code 84 only the check engine light was on. I shut it off and disconnected the postive and negative battery cables and touched them together as you suggested. I left them together about 2 minutes while i cleaned the battery terminals. I then put it back together and started the car, only the check engine light stayed on. I took the car for a test drive and it drove just fine. Any ideas as to what may have triggered the code in the first place? Any any ideas as to why the code cleared after i started the car? Keep in mind that this happened at 0630 this am, the car had a chance to completely cool off before i went out to do this.
Customer:
Well I have to go now ty for your help
