</h2> [blockquote]Another kind of body armour - iPod saves soldier, but now won't show up in iTunes (Updated!!!)

18445618234e24dc6bd59.jpg

Oh man! What a scary-cool picture. U.S. Army soldier Kevin Garrad got some help from his iPod in Iraq. An AK-47 round, shot at point blank range, could (possibly) go right through most body armor. Garrad's iPod took the brunt of this bullet and slowed in down, his vest stopped it completely.

Here's the description by tikigod on Flickr:

Kevin Garrad (3rd Infantry Division) was on a street patrol in Iraq (Tikrit I believe) and as he rounded the corner of a building an armed (AK-47) insurgent came from the other side. The two of them were within just a few feet of each other when they opened fire. The insurgent was killed and Kevin was hit in the left chest where his IPod was in his jacket pocket. It slowed the bullet down enough that it did not completely penetrate his body armor.

What are the obvious jokes to be made?

- I hope he's still in warranty. Oh wait, Apple will say it was misuse.
- He must have a lot of heavy metal music on it.
- I hope he backed up his music library on his computer.
- If a bullet can find his iPod, why can't iTunes find mine.

Heroic marine throws himself on grenade

21newsgraphics200866061.jpg

A Royal Marine could receive the highest award for gallantry after he saved the lives of his comrades by throwing himself onto an exploding grenade in Afghanistan, it has been reported.
Lance Corporal Matt Croucher amazingly survived the incident despite shrapnel peppering his helmet during the explosion.

His extraordinary courage, which could lead to a citation for the Victoria Cross, came after a tripwire ****y-trap was stepped on during a nighttime mission outside the town of Sangin, Helmand province.
A live hand-grenade was released threatening to blow up L/Cpl Croucher, 24 and the rest of the patrol.
The marine shouted "grenade" and as his friends dived for cover L/Cpl Croucher lay with his back on the lethal device.
The patrol commander, Corporal Adam Lesley threw himself to the ground and another man got behind a wall, but one marine had frozen and was still standing when the grenade detonated.
"My reaction was, 'My God this can't be real'," said Cpl Lesley. "Croucher had simply lain back and used his day sack to blunt the force of the explosion. You would expect nine out of 10 people to die in that situation."
With fuses that can last several seconds the men waited for what "felt like a lifetime" before the grenade blew up.
The marine's backpack, thought to contain ammunition, was thrown more than 30ft and sent a burning radio battery flying through the air.
L/Cpl Croucher, who suffered a bleeding nose and shock, was saved by the special plating inside his Osprey body armour. He almost certainly saved the life of Marine Scott Easter who had "just completely frozen".
"All I could hear was a loud ringing and the faint sound of people shouting 'are you ok? Are you ok?'" L/Cpl Croucher, a reservist from Birmingham, told the News of the World.
"Then I felt one of the lads giving me a top to toe check. My head was ringing. Blood was streaming from my nose. It took 30 seconds before I realised I was definitely not dead," he added.
Cpl Lesley said: "He had shrapnel in his helmet, in the plate of his body armour, but he was basically okay.
"His day sack had taken the blast."
The action happened on Feb 9 as the reconnaissance troop from 40 Commando went to search a bomb-making factory in a compound out Sangin.
A Ministry of Defence statement said: "L/Cpl Croucher has displayed incredible bravery in his action in Afghanistan. His bravery could well be recognised through some form of gallantry award in due course along with other personnel from the latest deployment to Afghanistan

An Army Sergeant stationed at Schoffield Barracks in Hawaii was recently awarded the Silver Star for bravery on the field of battle. The Soldier, Sergeant Scott Kenyon, first shot, then wrestled with an Iraqi insurgent who was shooting at him with a silenced 9mm machine gun. He didn’t even hear the shots until one hit his kevlar, the bullet embedding itself into the side of it, and one into his body armor. The bullet hit his helmet so hard, it turned his head to one side.
“I’m not going to lie. I was scared — I was scared to death,” the tall and lanky 22-year-old man from Lansing, Mich., said yesterday.
Kenyon shot the insurgent in the hand, causing the weapon to fly out of his hand. He also shot the other Iraqi that was firing on him. According to the Honolulu Advertiser:
But he kept going, wrestling down the Iraqi who had the machine gun, while another Schofield squad killed the other man.
Yesterday, against a much different backdrop of greenery at Schofield Barracks, where the greatest threat was rain, Kenyon received a Silver Star for his actions in Iraq nearly a year ago on June 6, 2008.
The medal is the nation’s third-highest military award for valor. Kenyon was recognized for his courage under enemy fire and effectiveness in subduing two enemy combatants.
About 75 fellow soldiers in B Company of the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry “Gimlets” stood in formation during the award and congratulated — and razzed — Kenyon afterward, shaking his hand and slapping him on the shoulder.
“Serving my country is enough for me. Getting the Silver Star — that’s a bonus,” Kenyon said.
He also pointed out the contributions of the other soldiers on the mission.
“It wasn’t just me,” said Kenyon, a somewhat reserved soldier who didn’t look entirely comfortable in the spotlight.

A NANTWICH soldier serving in Afghanistan has escaped death after being shot in the chest.
Crucially the high velocity bullet was absorbed by his bodsy armour.
