After successfully marketing the Zonda for three years, Pagani of Italy has upgraded the Zonda to include a new 7.3-liter V12.
Horacio Pagani is the man behind the Zonda. With experience gained by working at Lamborghini, he brought the Zonda C12 into fruition. The first prototype was seen at the 1999 Geneva Auto Show.
As a newcomer to the super car market, Pagani is taking on the top manufacturers. They completed this remarkable car in 1999 and will continue to sell it against the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT and Koenigsegg CC.
Zonda entered the super car market with Pagani's extended knowledge of carbon fiber construction. Before the car, Pagani manufactured carbon fiber components for third party manufacturers. They now use the Zonda to showcase their high level of carbon fiber craftsmanship and work it to make top flite supercar.
Each Zonda is a carbon fiber masterpiece, with every layer of fiber being carefully lined up. Indeed, the Zonda eclipses Ferrari when it comes to carbon fiber construction. Much of the car sports unpainted, carbon fiber components, reminding the owner of what lies under the glossy paint.
The car is styled by Horacio himself. Early styling assistance comes from the great Juan Manuel Fangio. I have heard that motivation for the car's lines comes from Mr. Pagani's wife.
At the center of the Zonda is a Mercedes-Benz, AMG V12. New for 2002 is the 7.3 liter unit found in the 1995 SL 7.3 AMG. This is one of the largest V12s ever used in a road-going car. With increased displacement, no additional horsepower is realized. What the increased displacement offers is more torque earlier in the rpm band.
To cope with the additional torque, the Zonda now equipped with traction control. This is a new feature of the 7.3.
When considering the Zonda, it is hard not to compare it to the Ferrari Enzo. Both cars have a carbon fiber monocoque with a mid ship, V12 driving the rear wheels. Easily, the Ferrari still has many advantages. It wins in shifting, braking, aerodynamics and handling. Remember, these are the most important aspects concerning a race car. Despite that, the Zonda wins based on price and build quality (especially in the carbon fiber department). Both exclusive cars sprint to 60 mph in roughly the same time so you 0-60 junkies can call the cars 'even'.
The most remarkable fact behind the Zonda is that, as newcomer to the super car market, it still competes with likes of Ferrari and Porsche. The Ferrari Enzo has benefited from fifty years of Ferrari racing while Pagani is entirely new. Horacio Pagani has done a job very few people in the world could do, and that is take on Ferrari with his first product.

To be produced in a strictly limited edition of 40 completely made-to-measure cars, the Zonda Roadster will once again cristallize Pagani's philosophy: marry the most exotic technology - such as the never-seen-before carbon fiber/carbon textile removable roof - to the loving care of the artigiano handwork, to produce Una Macchina con Anima.
The new Zonda Roadster, like all Pagani creations, has been designed around truly innovative technology ideas, and with a special attention to safety - a key issue in the super convertibles segment, and a constant preoccupation of the manufacturer - as its technical specs show:
- the new carbon fiber central chassis structure reaches the highest structural rigidity level available in the segment, 18.000 Nm/mm in torsional rigidity, 9.000 Nm/mm in flexional rigidity, for a dry weight of 1280 Kg.
- the roll bar, elliptical in section, is built out of carbon and chrome-molybdene alloy and is linked to the aft section of the chassis through a finely handworked Ergal element.
- the full-carbon body shows a new engine hood configuration, and a new rear hood design where two NACA air vents work as air extractors.
- the 7.3l Mercedes Benz AMG engine transmits its 555HP/750Nm power through the ABS/Traction Control safety systems already used in the Zonda S.
- the wheels are forged in aluminum and the 255/35/19 and 345/35/19 tires have been specially developed for the Zonda by Michelin, adding to the car's unique styling and technology.
But the Zonda Roadster is not just a list of superlative safety and perfomance specs: according to Horacio Pagani, founder and head designer of Pagani Automobili: The new Zonda Roadster we will unveil in Geneva is a true expression of the Pagani sprit: we do not just build supercars, we build 'Una Macchina con Anima, a car with a soul'. What the public will discover is more than a beautiful piece of emotion turned into carbon fiber and aluminum: only 40 Zonda Roasters will be handbuilt, each one to the exact taste of its owner, like a perfect-fitting tailored suit. Horacio Pagani, with his Zonda C12 in 1998, then the C12S in 2000 and the Zonda Roadster in 2003, has created a new generation of legendary cars. At the 2--4 Mondial de l'Automobile, Pagani Automobili reaffirmed its evolution by displaying a two-tone Pagani Roadster as their highlight stand.
Every Pagani is unique, but the Paris Show Car is the first with a two tone paint, very similar to certain cars built in the middle of last century. The upper part of the car is a beautiful metallic Red while the lower part is a metallic Black enlightened by golden dust. This special finishing allows a visual blending of the carbon fibre components with the lower body elements and produces a dynamic effect of the silhouette that is already particularly airy in this open version.
It is also important to highlight that the Roadster, as well as the two other cars displayed, is equipped with the new version of the gearbox produced for Pagani by Cima, the gearbox specialist. Thanks to the experience gained by this supplier in the Formula 1 field, this gearbox allows a faster and, simultaneously, very comfortable gear shifting, thanks to a shorter stroke on the gearbox lever, shortened by 20%, to a refinement of the gearshift mechanism and improved synchronisers, underlining even more the purism of this transmission.

Of the few supercars made for neither road or sporting regulations, this Pagani Zonda is an unlikely candidate. Only one was built from the ground up as a unique track-day special to perform as fast as Pagani could make it go.
The Monza first appeared at the 2004 Paris Motor Show where Pagani declared that it was not made for any specific racing series. Instead, it was specially ordered by an ambitious American customer interested in something entirely different. So, every aspect of the already impressive supercar was redone and it probably became Pagani's most expensive build to date.
From the outside, the Monza's motorsport potential is immediately obvious. It's large rear wing, wheel well vents, tow hook, carbon fibre roof and plexi windows do little to conceal the potential underneath.
In the engine bay is a dry-sump version of AMG's potent 7.3 liter V12 that is fixed rigidly to become an integral part of the carbon fiber chassis. Using new ceramic headers and an exhaust without silencers or catalysts, power is somewhere north of 600 bhp (447 kw) and transmitted to the rear wheels through a special synchronized gearbox with custom ratios and racing sintered clutch.
To help keep this power in check, all the suspension is updated to be more rigid with 5-way adjustable Ohlins shocks, larger Brembro discs and lightweight Speedline wheels with single locking nuts.
Inside, the Monza is strictly business with a stripped out interior that better reveals the beauty of Pagani's carbon fiber weave. Ingress is limited by a huge Sparco roll cage and deep racing seats. The driver is treated to a Motec digital display, resigned pedals and a unique steering wheel with controls for necessary features like the fire extinguisher, battery cutoff and pneumatic quick lifts.
After the Paris Show, the Monza was shipped to the USA, but not before fitting a larger adjustable rear wing. While in the US, it has been driven less than 30 miles and is currently being sold in new condition. For anyone interested in seeing or acquiring the sole Monza, it is available at Exotic Cars in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas with over $100,000 in spare parts.

Unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show, The Zonda F is one of the fastest supercars ever made. Built using Pagani's extensive experience in carbon fibre construction, the Zonda is leader with regard to fit and finish. With this car, Pagani Automobili is among a small group of independent supercar manufacturers that challenge more established competition such as Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini.
During the outset of the Zonda project, Juan Manuel Fangio consulted and influenced Horacio Pagani on every aspect of the Zonda. Horacio says Fangio had great 'technical sensibility' and was a major source of inspiration for his car. Thus, it should come to no surprise that Pagani's latest work pays tribute to the late Fangio, a world champion five times over.
Zonda F is a special edition car that will be built alongside the regular production model. It takes the modifications adapted to the C12-S Monza and refines them into a more appealing package. As a result the Zonda F is lighter, more powerful and faster than its predecessor.
Aerodynamics play large role in shaping Zonda's new car. More traditional devices include a one-piece fixed wing which now gets undisturbed air thanks to relocated mirrors. To help airflow underneath, a larger front splitter and rear diffuser with twin stabilizing wings create even more downforce. At the front of the Zonda F is a much larger air intake to increase cooling effectiveness of the more potent V12 engine.
To give the Zonda F more power, a new induction system is used which replaces the standard Mercedes-Benz unit. It features larger intake apertures and, when combined with a larger, hydroformed exhaust, the 7.3 liter Mercedes-Benz engine reaches 620 bhp. This is up from 550 achieved with the standard Mercedes intake. A clubsport model is available as an option which increases power to 650 bhp @ 6200 rpm.
The chassis receives several upgrades which lighten both the overall and unspung weight of the Zonda. Newly designed 19 and 20 inch wheels make room for much larger brakes which can now be ordered in a ceramic compound for the first time. Combined with the titanium wheel nuts, and various trimmings of the carbon fiber tub, the Zonda F weighs 1230 kgs without liquids.
After all these changes it should come to no surprise that Pagani has made a much superior Zonda. With 650 bhp on tap, the clubsport model should easily rival cars including the Porsche Carrera GT and Ferrari Enzo.
